2026 BMW TAX CONSIDERATIONS IN LAFAYETTE, INDIANA.

A BMW for your business starts with understanding your options. At BMW of Lafayette, explore vehicles that fit your daily needs while your qualified tax professional helps you evaluate potential Section 179 and depreciation benefits.

Use this guide to prepare for that conversation, then contact the dealership for vehicle information and business purchase options.

Discuss Your Business Vehicle

THREE THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY.

2026 SUV LIMIT.

The Section 179 cap for qualifying heavy SUVs placed in service in tax years beginning in 2026 is $32,000, subject to other limits. It is not a guaranteed deduction or the total depreciation ceiling.

BUSINESS USE MATTERS.

Section 179 generally requires more than 50% qualified business use. Personal use affects the deductible amount.

VERIFY THE VEHICLE.

The heavy-SUV rule generally covers passenger vehicles rated above 6,000 and no more than 14,000 pounds GVWR. Verify the specific vehicle’s rating.

UNDERSTANDING SECTION 179.

Section 179 lets eligible businesses elect an immediate deduction for qualifying purchases. Taxable business income and overall investment limits apply. The vehicle must be placed in service during the relevant tax year; ordering alone is insufficient.

A deduction reduces taxable income. It is not a dollar-for-dollar tax credit or a payment from BMW of Lafayette.

HOW BONUS DEPRECIATION FITS IN.

Current federal law provides 100% additional first-year depreciation for eligible property acquired after January 19, 2025, subject to applicable requirements. This may be relevant to a qualifying business vehicle placed in service in 2026.

The 100% rate does not mean every BMW purchase qualifies for a full-price deduction. Vehicle-specific restrictions and business use still matter. Your advisor should determine the eligible basis, applicable limits and treatment of any remaining basis after Section 179.

START WITH YOUR DAILY NEEDS.

Considering a BMW X5, X6 or X7? Discuss passenger space, cargo needs and driving preferences with BMW of Lafayette. Request the exact vehicle’s specifications to share with your tax professional.

Model names and photographs do not establish tax eligibility. The VIN-specific vehicle rating and your business circumstances need individual review.

PURCHASING AND LEASING FOR BUSINESS.

PURCHASE OR FINANCE.

An eligible owned vehicle may qualify for depreciation. Financing does not by itself prevent depreciation, but the transaction and all other requirements must qualify.

LEASE.

A conventional lessee generally cannot depreciate the vehicle’s purchase cost. Depending on the expense method and applicable limits, business-use lease payments may be deductible.

Business and personal costs must be distinguished. Ask your advisor to compare actual expenses with the standard mileage method and explain how your choice affects depreciation. Keep records supporting business miles and expenses.
