From Classroom to Service Bay: A GLCA Student’s Journey at BMW of Lafayette
The Greater Lafayette Career Academy, known locally as GLCA, offers students a structured pathway into technical careers through hands on learning and real world experience. Within its automotive program, students explore foundational and advanced automotive concepts while also participating in guided dealership internships. This includes the opportunity to learn inside BMW of Lafayette, where students observe professional environments that support their development as future technicians.
Developing Technical Foundations at GLCA
GLCA automotive student Ari Rodriguez, a senior at McCutcheon High School, has spent three semesters building a strong foundation in automotive service and career preparation. One of the program’s first major learning experiences centers on a full go kart build, a project designed to teach students the importance of precision, teamwork, and thoughtful mechanical problem solving.
Working in small groups, students began with concept planning, then moved into fabrication and assembly. Challenges were expected and served as part of the learning process. Ari’s group navigated several mechanical adjustments that required careful reasoning and adaptability. When the brakes failed to function as intended, the team sourced a working set from a scrap kart. When seat alignment proved difficult, new mounting points were created to ensure proper fitment. Clearance issues were resolved with custom 3D printed spacers designed by instructor Mr. Locker. Additional adjustments were made to the front end to improve height and stability.
Following the build, students tested their work through classroom competitions, then advanced to a multi school event at Subaru’s testing track. There, they participated in inspections, time trials, and performance challenges while observing the different approaches taken by teams across the state. Through this process, Ari built early experience in electrical systems, welding, communication, and time management, all of which are essential in a professional automotive environment.
Applying Knowledge Through Real World Experience
As students progress into the capstone phase, GLCA introduces more advanced systems such as steering, suspension, electrical diagnostics, and brake service. These units combine structured classroom instruction with the type of hands on shop work students would encounter in a professional setting like the BMW of Lafayette Service Center.
Ari gained experience using equipment essential to modern automotive service, including lifts, brake lathes, alignment racks, tire machines, and balancing tools. Instructor guidance emphasized repetition to strengthen confidence and accuracy. These experiences give students an understanding of industry standards and expectations long before they enter the workforce.
A central part of the capstone program is the dealership internship rotation. Students spend part of their school week rotating through key departments within local dealerships. During Ari’s internship experience, rotations included HR, parts operations similar to those within the BMW of Lafayette Parts Center, marketing, reconditioning, BDC, sales, service advising, and technician environments aligned with the BMW service team workflow.
Rotating through these areas gives students clarity about the roles they may want to pursue and provides a realistic understanding of how a modern dealership functions. The variety of experiences helps students recognize where their strengths and interests align within the automotive field.
Throughout the program, Ari has completed dual credit courses in foundational automotive systems, including electrical, brakes, steering and suspension, and engine performance. These credits support future academic opportunities and prepare students for ASE certification exams. GLCA also incorporates ASE practice testing, ensuring students understand the expectations of professional certifications they may pursue after graduation.
Experiences like these help students define their career goals with confidence. For Ari, the combination of technical training, hands on projects, and dealership exposure has reinforced a commitment to working within the automotive industry. Partnerships between GLCA and local dealerships such as BMW of Lafayette offer students a meaningful environment to learn, refine their abilities, and prepare for the next step in their professional journey.
